the Room, Who really is the main character and holds the story together?

Though some may think the Room is a stupid waste of time movie, others think the opposite. Those people think like me, and think of The Room is a dynamic love story with twist and turns as sticking a rope in a Euro-Pro Ninja Master Prep Blender and Food Processor. Anyway, the plot is simple, a love story between Johnny and Lisa that's gone awry. The awry part is Mark, Johnny's best friend, who sleeps with Lisa, Johnny's soon to be wife, but never fiance.

I know what you're saying, why isn't see his fiance. Well, I can't exactly answer that I didn't write the script. Though sometimes I wish I did. First of all, let's break down the main characters.

Johnny- He is the bread winner, he works in the computer business. He gives Lisa, his soon to be wife a roof over her head & I guess money because it seems like she doesn't work. He also buys her dresses & roses, which is nice saying that she is sleeping with his best friend. While Johnny has the burden of taking care of Denny too. Johnny doesn't drink, but likes a good pizza every once in a while, and a drunk girlfriend with a tie wrapped around her head. He is the average everyday man. He has to deal with all this stress so he has to play football or catch at close range with his friends like any normal person. He tells Peter the psychologist about his problems, but he is a shitty athlete, especially in a tux. Is he the main character that hold's the story together?

Lisa-
She is the lover of both Johnny & Mark; weird I know, but that's life. She has to deal with...well, her crazy mother who has a reputation of being married several times. Weird...I know. Though she tricked Mark saying the affair would be a one time deal, well it wasn't. Sorry folks. Love is not blind, it's a slut in a red dress. Though she is helpful with giving Denny cooking products and trying to keep his crazy self in line. Though she helped Johnny out when he was working in a hotel. You know she picks up foreign bell boys. I guess it's a hobby for some San Fran women...weird. Lisa has weird friends and Denny most definitely has a crush on her. Is she the main character?

Mark- being Johnny's badass friend, exercise buddy, who smokes the occasional joint on the rooftop, with a beard and sports a jean jacket. He is the one that Lisa goes for. Mark, being a badass, constantly stating that Johnny is his best friend and that he shouldn't hurt him. Does it anyway. Even plays catch and goes to the wedding. He jogs with Johnny even tells him about his woman problems...of course Peter is there. Though don't mention underwear around this guy when playing catch, you'll get tackled (just a warning). He's a fan of beta breakers...whatever that may be. Weird. He shaves before the wedding while still keeping his tough look. Will Johnny & Mark stay friends till the end? Is he the main character? I know he's a badass...but can a rebel hold the plot together?

Denny-
He doesn't have a mean bone in his body or a brain as a matter of fact. Denny knows all the other characters. He comes on strong in the beginning of the movie, wanting a three some with Johnny and Lisa. Now, that's weird. Though Denny doesn't have much he seems pretty together and one hell of a cook. Just kidding. It seems like he has beef towards Peter, but then again who doesn't. Peter always 'seems to play psychologist' and to tell the truth he's a major buzz kill and Denny calls him out on that. Denny is very thankful for Johnny as well as Lisa. He really likes her. He tells Johnny about it. Johnny takes it extremely well, almost creepy well. Is he the glue holding all the characters together?

Claudette- Probably one hell of a mother in law. She is helping Lisa out with her daily relationship troubles with Johnny. Trying to keep her from going down the same crazy road that she went down. Constantly getting married and divorced and having housing trouble. Though Claudette plays the idiot mother in law, she's very aware of what goes on. She meets all the friends. Lisa tells her everything. She even sees Denny get into trouble with Chris R. now that was a pivotal point in the movie. What are kind of drugs? Why did Denny get drugs? I don't know hoe she feels about guns, but she sure as hell doesn't like them on rooftops, pointed towards Denny. Is she the character holding everything together? She keeps Lisa down to earth, off planet skank if you will.

Peter- Peter is not in the movie much. He helps out both Johnny and Mark by as they say 'playing psychologist.' Though someone has to. Due to his non athletic prowess he keeps his relationships with guys as comic relief as well as brain calmer downer. He wears a lot of hats in the movie. Finding Mark smoking a joint on the roof top leads him to believe that he is the one the sleeping with Lisa. Having a psychologists background he feels that they should talk it out prior to describing drugs to him & Johnny for 'Lisa being a slut' disorder. Though that is not a real disorder, it is not fake. Is he a horrible athlete? Yes, is he holding the characters together though?

Chris R.- You don't want to owe this guy money unless of course you are Denny and maybe bought drugs from him. Though you forgot to pay him back because you were doing something weird. It seems that Chris R. is by far the best dressed villain in the movie. All black, who would have thought of a bad guy wearing all black? George Lucas?
J. R. R. Tolkien? Correct. Tommy Wiseau. His aggressive my be quite abrasive. I'd be kind of pissed of pissed at Denny too if he owed me money. Too bad Johnny & Mark were there to take Chris R. to the police. Though what were the charges? Keeping the gang together? More misunderstanding of the character Denny? Learning nothing gets solved by violence in the Bay area? Giving Lisa more time to bang Mark? Is Chris R. the glue holding this movie together?

There will be a counter point analysis of this movie by Hughesbrews. Stay tuned.

  1. So, if you're writing an analysis of who the main character is, do you think it would have been helpful to tell us who you think the main character is?

Also, I don't mean to quibble, but is it possible to have a "counterpoint" when this article didn't actually make a point, but only asked questions?
